Our Priorities

While EQMI partners with a host of local, state, and national organizations on many issues impacting Michigan’s LGBTQ communities and every issue is critical, to be most effective we must prioritize our work. The following our the political priorities of EQMI Action Network.

  1. Amending the Elliott Larsen Civil Rights Act (ELCRA) to include LGBTQ inclusive protections in housing, employment, and public accommodations.
  2. Ensuring pro-LGBTQ human rights ordinance passage in targeted cities, townships, and jurisdictions across Michigan.
  3. Defending marriage equality and LGBTQ adoption against laws and regulations granting “special rights” to religious individuals and institutions that legally sanction discrimination against LGBTQ individuals.
  4. Ensuring transgender health and well being through supportive LGBTQ healthcare access policies. LGBTQ cultural competency mandates in public institutions, and anti-violence policies, practices, and legal recourse against those engaged in hate and intimate partner violence against LGBTQ individuals.
