EQMI Statement on Muslim Ban

Equality Michigan and Equality Michigan Action Network oppose the Trump Administration’s attempt to ban immigrants and deny basic civil liberties based on religion and national origin. As an anti-violence and advocacy organization fighting for equality, we believe that everyone, regardless of their religion, nationality, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, deserves to be safe and equal under the law.

Policies that discriminate must always be opposed, and Equality Michigan will continue to stand in solidarity with our civil rights and civil liberties allies here in Michigan and across the country until we all have equal rights. Furthermore, our Department of Victim Services will continue to serve all members of our community, without regard to immigration status.

The LGBTQ community is vast and diverse. We come from all walks of life, all races, religions, and countries of origin. Michigan is home to one of the largest and most vibrant Muslim communities in the world, including many individuals who are also LGBT. We know the power of diversity and inclusion. We resist the division and fear that the President’s Executive Order seeks to inflame, and instead, we will continue to stand for unity, dignity, and respect for all marginalized people.
