MICHIGAN – To kick off LGBTQ+ Pride Month, Equality Michigan Action Network is announcing its initial round of official endorsements for the 2024 election. These endorsements reflect our commitment to supporting LGBTQ+ candidates and candidates who champion LGBTQ+ rights, equality, and inclusion.

Equality Michigan Action Network endorses viable candidates running for statewide positions, the state legislature, county-level positions, and judicial positions who have a proven track record of supporting equal rights and legal protections for LGBTQ+ Michiganders. We remain committed to endorsing and supporting openly LGBTQ+ and pro-equality candidates — up and down the ballot — who will fight for civil rights and social justice in our state. This year’s slate of endorsements includes 14 LGBTQ+ candidates thus far.

Equality Michigan Action Network Executive Director Erin Knott gave the following statement: “Equality is on the ballot this November, and the stakes have never been higher for LGBTQ+ people and our families. Michigan has come too far the last two years to turn back now. We urge LGBTQ+ individuals and allies to turn out and vote on issues that affect our lives like equal protections under the law, voting access, and the ability to make decisions about our own bodies. Equality Michigan Action Network is proud to endorse outstanding candidates, whose leadership and dedication will help create a more welcoming Michigan for all in 2024 and beyond.”

To qualify for endorsement, a candidate must have completed our equality questionnaire, they must show they have the knowledge and ability to run a competitive campaign, and they must have a 100% favorable voting record (if applicable). A formal endorsement indicates our belief that this candidate is the best choice available for advancing LGBTQ+ equality based on the information that was available to us. As a part of the process, Equality Michigan Action Network made a good-faith effort to formally invite every candidate in the State of Michigan, running for a seat in the Michigan House of Representatives or a range of county-level seats, including commissioner and executive positions.

In districts where multiple viable candidates applied for endorsement, Equality Michigan Action Network has provided an “Approved” Candidate status to those who answered the questionnaire 100% correctly. This is not a formal endorsement of one candidate over another, but rather an indicator for equality voters to understand whether a certain candidate has a track record of pro-equality actions or has conveyed pro-equality values.
