Statement from Erin Knott, Executive Director of Equality Michigan, on the University of Michigan’s Decision to Halt Gender-Affirming Care for Trans Youth
KALAMAZOO, MI — Equality Michigan is deeply disappointed and concerned by the University of Michigan’s decision to halt access to medically necessary, evidence-based care for transgender youth under the age of 19. This action marks yet another alarming move by a major healthcare institution to walk away from its responsibility to serve all patients — including some of our most vulnerable young people.
Erin Knott, Executive Director of Equality Michigan, issued the following statement:
“It is especially disheartening to see this decision come from an institution within our own state — one long recognized for its leadership in both healthcare and education.
Even in making this harmful decision, the University of Michigan appears to acknowledge the legitimacy and value of gender-affirming care. Yet, it has chosen to retreat. This sends a chilling and damaging message to the very young people who most need affirmation, stability, and support.
Trans youth and their families are already navigating a climate of fear and uncertainty. This decision only deepens that trauma. We are heartbroken — for the young people being told their care no longer matters, for the parents now scrambling to find safe alternatives, and for the community that must once again rise to fill the void left by institutions that should know better.
Let us be clear: gender-affirming care remains legal in the State of Michigan. And Equality Michigan, alongside a broad coalition of partners, will continue working tirelessly to ensure every trans young person in our state has access to the care, dignity, and respect they deserve.
To the trans youth and families impacted by this: we see you. We love you. And we will not stop fighting for you. You deserve better — and we will not stop until you get it.”
